USHO Statement
on Horse Slaughter

USHO is absolutely against horse slaughter because of the in-humane treatment of horses in the slaughter pipeline. We view the "slaughter pipeline" as starting where the horse traders or kill buyers pick the horse up from auctions or from unsuspecting owners through the death of the horse at a slaughter house. USHO fully supports the passage of the ban on transport to slaughter.

Our concern for the horse ends when the horse draws it's last breath and is beyond pain. Therefor we are not against people eating horses, nor are we against the use of horse meat to feed zoo animals. We are concerned for those who choose to use meat from horses not specifically raised as food animals. (See our Why Horse Meat is Not Safe Page) As many zoos have found out, horses are not raised as food animals and the meat is often tained with drugs not intended for use in food animals.

USHO's goal is to help horses BEFORE they enter the slaughter pipeline. We accomplish this by:

  • Our community outreach program where we work with horse owners who are struggling. We've provided training, hay, trims and medicines to struggling families. If we cannot get them back on track, we provide free assistance to place their horses into new homes without the use of auctions.
  • Our Thoroughbred Placements where we work to place thoroughbred who are no longer competitive from the racetracks directly into new homes.
  • Community education about the fact that slaughter still exists and to discourage breeding.
